My Story

In 2010, I made a giant decision. Against the advice of family members and close friends, I had turned my back on an attractive promotion which would have made me the youngest Regional Manager in Hong Leong Assurance, which was the life insurance company where I was working in at the time.

And the reason for my bold (some would say crazy) action was simply this – I wanted to pursue my dream to become a professional trainer. I felt that calling, you know what I mean? Some people become missionaries, activists or priests but my calling is to become a trainer.

And since that fateful decision, I’ve had the opportunity of conducting over 200 workshops and seminars in Malaysia and China.

Some of my clients include DHL, World Wildlife Fund, Shell, Wacker, Lend Lease, and many more.

Then, in 2014 I achieved one of my childhood dreams – I became a published author.

The book I wrote is entitled Entrepreneur DNA: How to Make it Big and Profitable with a Small Business During Tough Times. This book is all about helping you turn your passion into a profitable business. The DNA model which I developed in this book was subsequently taught in the Entrepreneurship course at Curtin University.

I very nearly gave up early into my journey as a professional trainer. I remember vividly how frustrated I felt, making only a tiny fraction of what I was earning in my last job. It hadn't turned out exactly the way I had envisioned it to be.

There were 3 things in particular that frustrated me the most.

  • Why was it so difficult to get hired by my potential clients?
  • How do I get hired and paid the rate that I know I deserve, rather than just speaking for free? (Free doesn't put food on the table nor pay the bills, you see)
  • But most importantly, I don't want to go back to working in a 9-to-5 job with my tail betwen my legs.

Anthony Robbins said, “In life, you need either inspiration or desperation.” In my case, inspiration motivated me to take that giant leap of faith. But it was my moment of desperation that forced me to re-evaluate what I was doing wrong.

That was when I realised that as a professional trainer, your ability to conduct training alone is not enough to ensure you survive and thrive in this competitive field.

You see, you could be the most talented and skilled trainer out there but if no one hires you, you will be out of business. What good can an out-of-business trainer do for the world, right?

Hence, I’ve come to a conclusion that you need to know how to position and market yourself smartly and strategically to stand out in the crowded training market place.

So, I began investing my time, energy and money into re-educating myself and applying what I learn from the masters such as Tony Robbins, Brendon Burchard, T Harv Eker and many others. And by doing things differently (or I should say correctly), attractive training gigs started coming my way.

For instance, I was hired by AXA Affin Life to go on a speaking tour throughout Malaysia to motivate their agency force for their financial year end closing drive, engaged by WWF to train their scientists how to use NLP and flown to Shanghai to teach a team of experienced construction engineers how to present their tender proposals to win multimillion-dollar project bids.

I know for a fact that what I’ve learned and experienced will help you navigate the roads ahead in your journey as a new trainer strategically. I’m honoured to be on this journey with you, my fellow trainer.
